Having a car in summer can be a real asset - not only can you make the most of the activities in the immediate area, thereby packing more into each day, but you can also drive to lovely places nearby and double the choice of things to do each day. A trip to Chamonix is highly recommended, where you can take the cablecar ride to the Aiguille du Midi at the very top of Europe, or meander up the rack railway to the Mer de Glace. Annecy, a pretty lakeside town, is well worth a visit, as are Yvoire, a picturesque medieval village and Thonon, both on Lac Leman, a short drive from Morzine. Thonon has both indoor and outdoor pools as well as swimming and sailing on the lake and lakeside outdoor restaurants. Montreux, at the end of the lake, hosts the annual Jazz Festival with many free concerts. Drive over the Col de Joux Plane to nearby Samoëns, up to Avoriaz or over to Les Gets to make the most of new walks, mountain restaurants or simply a change of scene!
